Students need school libraries

National Students Need School Libraries Campaign

In an era of fake news and alternative facts, well-resourced school libraries prepare students for the future by giving them skills including the  ability to find information quickly and identifying trustworthy sources.

A new national campaign called 'Students Need School Libraries' was launched on 16th October.

To support the campaign a series of films, that examine what it means to have an effective school library, have been created. Children’s Laureate, Morris Gleitzman, former Children’s Laureate, Jackie French, and many other authors, teacher librarians, students, classroom teachers and others describe their personal and professional experiences with school libraries.

Real Libraries: Reading the World

This conference explores the role of the school library in engaging and developing young people as readers. It considers how our students read their own world through literature and, through this, better understand themselves and their place in their own community.

School libraries create, foster and enable this reading experience and, consequently, play a vital role in the development of literate, empathetic and knowledgeable young people.

Join us for a full and busy day that features Erica Wagner - Dromkeen Medal winner, Dr Margaret Merga - Curtin University, Hugh Gunclach - VATE and award winning authors Fiona Wood and Cath Crowley in conversation with Emily Gale. The conference will also include two rounds of varied concurrent sessions, an organisation showcase and a poster gallery.

Final day for registration is Monday 19 November 2018.

Journals

FYI: the journal for the information professional

FYI  is the quarterly print publication from the School Library Association of Victoria.
It aims to provide informative articles on a range of topics that are discussed and set by its Editorial Committee annually. The topics are chosen for their relevance to current issues which concern teacher-librarians, both secondary and primary in public and private schools. The topics range from technology to literature; from teaching students the information skills they will need in the twenty-first century to developing in students the skills and desire to become lifelong readers.
