There is no one 'right' definition of the Science of Reading (SoR) and there is also no consensus as to theory, research, policy, or practice which counts as the Science of Reading (Goodwin & Jimenez, 2020). In this presentation, Noella will share some of the recent research and discussions that have used the term SoR and try to untangle some of the confusions that exist. She will also cite research that suggests that the 'successful teaching of reading blends both science of reading and teacher art or craft’ (Paige et al 2021). Reference will be made to the need for teachers and schools to inspire children to 'want to read', not just teach them 'how to read'.
Noella Mackenzie is an Independent Education Consultant and Associate Professor (adjunct) in the School of Education at Charles Sturt University. Noella is an experienced educator with many years of experience in schools and working for school systems before moving to research and academia. Her research is informed by her ongoing work with classroom teachers and is usually focused on teacher professional learning and the teaching and learning of writing. Noella has been published in research and professional journals, has co-edited two books on the teaching of writing and written many book chapters. In recent times Noella has been asked to explore the literature around the Science of Reading and share her understanding of this topic.
